Eugenol (C10H12O2) is guaiacol with a substituted allyl chain. ie 2 methoxy-4-(2-propenyl)phenol. Eugenol is a member of the allylbenzenes class of compounds. It is a pale yellow, oily liquid extracted from certain essential oils, especially cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon. It is hardly soluble in water and soluble in organic solvents. It has a pleasant clove smell.
